EMC News - Quinte West - Lower than expected amounts of snowfall this season has delayed the opening of Batawa Ski Hill.

The ski lift is running on time to take skiers to the top.
"Last year we opened on December 11, but this year it was December 24," said Stephanie Adams, administrator.
"But people are really excited to be here now," she added. "They're all posting pics on facebook."
Only three runs were operating the first week of opening, Bambi, Long John and the Terrain Park, but Stephanie said more runs would be open soon, including the popular Smokey and Old Smokey.
"We have 50 centimetres of base," she said. "The groomers are busy packing it all down and smoothing it out."
Two local skiers, Frank Edison and Austin O'Gorman, both 13 years old, were out skiing every day during the holidays.
"It really sucks there's only two runs open," said Edison.
He had a video camera on top of his hat to record his friends skiing.
Austin said the snow was okay and he was enjoying the skiing. He was wearing a ski bandana over his face to keep out the cold wind. They sell them at the registration desk inside.
"They have nose holes to breathe," noted Stephanie.
She said the ski school has been busier than ever, including group lessons and private or semi-private.
"People need to call ahead to book," she said.
Batawa Bistro is open every day offering high quality food from the new chef Tevor McMillan. A Greek feast is planned for January 18.
"The staff here are really fantastic," Stephanie said with a smile.
New this year is the ski and snowboard service along with rental equipment. Pete De Bruyn said people should get their skis sharpened and waxed as often as needed throughout the season.
"They get worn down and need to be sharpened to keep their edge," he said.
Check out ski conditions at or call 613-398-6568 for information. Batawa Ski Hill is open Wednesday to Sunday from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. with extended hours on holidays.
