President of the Newcastle Lions Club Jean Graham approached Centre Hastings Council for support in establishing a Lions Club in Madoc.
Jean Graham said, "Whenever a Lions Club gets together, problems get smaller and communities get better. That's because we help where help is needed, in our own communities and around the world, with unmatched integrity and energy."
With 46,000 clubs and 1.35 million members the Lion Club is the world's largest service club organization. "We're also one of the most effective. Our members do whatever is needed to help their local communities. Everywhere we work, we make friends," said Graham.
The Grahams are spearheading establishing a new Lions Club in Madoc and approached council as the first step to increasing support. They plan to attend meetings of several organizations in the area and then hold a public information meeting to communicate the club's activities, resources and finance information to strengthen a membership.
"You see a community in need. You remember the faces of people you have impacted through service. We want to give others the opportunity to make a real difference," commented Graham. "We want to give people in Madoc an opportunity to introduce projects and get the support they need."
A group of Lions may launch a new program to address an important humanitarian need that has not been met in a region. The need might be for a mobile health screening unit, expansion of a children's hospice, or development of a geriatric day care centre at a nursing home for low-income patients. The scope of possible projects is as great as the number of communities Lions serve.
